Target and Trigger Your Survey

How to control who sees your survey, on which pages, and what makes it appear.

Choose your audience

Open the survey's builder (Edit Survey from its Overview tab) and go to the Target tab. Under Segments, choose Anyone to show the survey to all users or Users in a segment to limit the survey to an existing segment, or click + New Segment to build one on the spot.

This opens the same Create Segment panel used elsewhere in Userback: give it a name and description, choose a condition field and operator, add more condition rows if needed, and set whether a user must match All or Any of them. See Users and Creating Segments for the full mechanics of building segments.

Choose where it appears

  • Mobile Screens: target specific screens inside a mobile app.

  • Pages: target specific URLs or page paths on your site.

  • Device: check any combination of desktop, tablet, and phone.

Set what triggers it

Under Triggers, choose how the survey should appear:

  • Page load: shows as soon as a targeted page loads.

  • Element click: shows when the respondent clicks a specific element you identify.

  • Rage click: shows when the respondent rapidly clicks the same spot, a strong frustration signal. See How to Trigger a Survey on Rage Click or Element Click for a worked setup.

  • Custom event: shows when your own code fires a named event.

  • Trigger the survey using JavaScript SDK: skips the built-in triggers entirely and lets your code call the survey open directly. See Smarter Surveys with the Userback JavaScript SDK.

Note: You will need to set your own stop conditions when using the JavaScript SDK to trigger your survey.

Set when it stops showing

Choose a stop condition so the same respondent isn't shown the survey indefinitely:

  • After the survey is submitted

  • After the survey is submitted or closed

  • After the survey is displayed

  • Never stops, even after the survey is submitted

A restart-after-days option may also be available to re-show the survey after a set number of days; confirm this against your own builder, since it wasn't independently re-verified for this rewrite. For behavior-based triggers like rage click, Never stops is usually the right choice; see the rage-click article above for why.
